I was assigned to make a master copy of a renaissance-era piece for an advanced painting class. I chose Caravaggio's Medusa in order to study light hitting the face at an angle as well as the use of chiaroscuro.

Almost done! Lots of scumbling on the face and snakes
Hitting some undertones in the snakes and background.
Putting in the first layer of glaze...
The finished underpainting. I used burnt sienna to mimic Caravaggio's bistre.
